Top Packing Tips for Moving

Packing up your belongings is often one of the most time-consuming parts of a move. While it might seem easiest to just throw everything in boxes and call it a day, taking the time to do it right can make a big difference. Not only will knowing the top packing hacks help make moving and unpacking much easier, but it will also help ensure your items stay safe during their relocation.

The following expert packing tips will help speed up the process and make the whole thing a bit less daunting.

1. Start a Soon as Possible

Packing always takes longer than you think it will. Save yourself a ton of stress by starting as soon as you can. One of  the easiest ways to do this is to begin by packing items you know you won’t need any time soon. For example, if you’re moving in the summer, pack up your winter clothes and holiday items first.

If procrastination is an issue, set aside one hour to pack each day. Choose a room, bring in your supplies, put on your favorite music, and pack until the timer goes off.

2. Declutter Before You Start Packing

There’s no sense in wasting time packing items you don’t really want or need. As soon as you know you’re going to move, begin decluttering each room in the house. If you can, designate a separate area in your home or garage where you can create piles of items you want to sell or donate. For larger items, you may also want to consider a junk removal service.

3. Keep Your Clothes on Hangers

There’s no need to create more work by taking your clothes off their hangers and putting them in boxes. Instead, grab a handful of items, cover them with a plastic trash bag, and tie it at the bottom. When you arrive at your new home, just pull off the bags and hang them back up.

4. Get Creative in the Kitchen

The kitchen can be one of the hardest rooms to pack, which is why it pays to get creative. You can use clothing and linens as padding for dishes and other breakables, and cover your stemware and glasses with clean socks.

Pull out silverware drawers and wrap them in plastic instead of packing the items inside. Save space by storing jars of spices inside cooking pots and keep unsheathed knives safe by wrapping them sharp end down in potholders and securing them with rubber bands.

5. Keep Reassembly in Mind

As you’re disassembling your furniture, electronics, and appliances, remember that you’re going to have to put it all back together. Make this easier by taking photos before you start pulling things apart. Put all small pieces in plastic bags, label them, seal them tightly, and secure them to the item they belong with. Make sure to do the same thing with cords. For complex items, you may also consider labeling pieces with tape so you can easily see how they go back together.
