Summer Moving Tips

Summer is one of the most popular times to move. The kids are out of school and your work schedule may be lighter – but moving in summer comes with its own set of challenges. Hot weather and high demand can wreak havoc on your move, but it doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience. As you make your plans, consider these important summer moving tips.

Book as Early as You Can

During the summer, it’s normal for weekends to book out months in advance. If you want to work with a great local mover, be sure to plan ahead. This will increase the chances that you’ll be able to book a date that works for your schedule.

Pack Carefully

Don’t rush your packing and be sure to keep the heat in mind. Candles can melt inside moving trucks, causing permanent damage if the wax gets on your other belongings. If you have kids, check the pockets of their clothes and other items for crayons, candy, and other things that might melt.

You’ll also want to avoid shrink-wrapping your clothing and take care when packing items like CDs, vinyl records, and certain types of equipment that could be damaged by excessive heat.

Stay Hydrated and Protect Yourself from the Sun

As with all summer activities, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun during your move. Wear plenty of sunscreen and a ballcap or a wide-brimmed hat. Make sure you drink enough water and stay in the shade when you can.

Also, remember that excessive heat can make you feel drowsy and anxious. Be sure to monitor your stress and take breaks any time you start to feel like you’re physically or mentally overheating.

Don’t Rush

It’s normal to want to get your move done quickly as possible, but as the temperature starts to climb, it’s also important not to rush. If you can, get help with disassembling heavy furniture and moving heavy boxes. Better yet, consider hiring a full-service moving company so you won’t have to worry about doing anything strenuous on moving day.

Make Plans for Your Kids and Pets

During the chaos of a move, it’s easy to forget about keeping kids and pets out of sun and the heat. You’ll likely have your doors open most of the time, rendering your air conditioning ineffective. This can create a dangerous situation.

Rather than giving yourself one more thing to worry about, plan to have your kids and pets stay with a relative, friend, or at a day care on moving day. This simple tip can make the day more comfortable and less stressful for everyone involved.
